Information regarding the special events & happenings of MALT for the 2022 season can be found via the links below. Check back often as events are added and information is updated.

  • Blue Ridge Brew-Off

As the organizers for the BRBO competition are still trying to get their sea legs back from Covid, it has been decided that although it was historically held in the fall, it was felt the additional time will allow for recruiting volunteers and additional planning; so, the event will be moved to Spring, 2023, held tentatively on the last Saturday of March.

The spring is usually not as busy a time for competitions and this event will be marketed as a pre-cursor to HomebrewCon, allowing interested participants to get some early feedback on brews that they might be considering to enter at the National level.

The drum will be beaten for volunteers which will include organizers, judges, stewards, as well as visionaries who can take this competition up to the next level.

  • Brew Day with Friends

Member Mike Spivey (Cane Creek neighborhood) will be hosting a brew day coming up in September (date TBD) and is looking for those interested in attending. He has lots of land for brewing, camping and fun! Look for a sign-up sheet as soon as the date is decided upon.

  • September SMaSH Club Competition

It’s time to brew a SMaSH beer for the club’s most popular internal competition!

Our September club meeting on the 15th, will feature a SMaSH (Single Malt and Single Hop) Competition for those attending. There will be prizes and mystery judges as well as a People’s Choice selection.

The guidelines are simple; one malt, one hop, yeast only (no brett or lacto). No adjuncts such as fruit, spices, wood, oats, lactose, etc. No other fermentables such as sugar or honey.

While this is a competition, it’s also a chance to learn about malts and hops which is why there are the restrictions above. Participants should plan to bring at least 32oz of their brew to the meeting.

Additional details to follow. Let Brian Dory (briandorry55@yahoo.com) know if you plan to participate (352-942-9979), so we have a rough idea as to # of entries.
